Abstract

Rural economic development is not merely concerned with increasing production and income but also with strengthening families’ capacity to manage resources and respond to economic and social shocks. Village economic potential represents a livelihood asset that can strengthen family resilience; however, its availability does not automatically generate welfare. Transforming local potential into sustainable livelihoods requires access to assets, human-resource capacity, value creation, market access, livelihood diversification, social capital, and institutional support. This study aims to analyze the economic potential of Sragi Village, examine the mechanisms through which local assets are transformed into family livelihood resources, and formulate a locally based economic empowerment model oriented toward family resilience. The study employs a qualitative case study approach. Participants were purposively selected from village government officials, the Office of Community and Village Empowerment, micro and small business actors, farmers, livestock farmers, women's groups, youth, community leaders, and households as the primary livelihood unit. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, focus group discussions (FGDs), and documentation, and analyzed thematically through data organization, coding, categorization, interpretation, and verification. Data credibility was strengthened through source and methodological triangulation, member checking, peer discussion, and researcher reflexivity. The findings indicate that Sragi Village possesses diverse economic assets consisting of natural, human, financial, social, physical, and digital capital. These assets contribute to family resilience through four main mechanisms: livelihood diversification, strengthening economic agency, expanding social capital, and institutional support. Nevertheless, the transformation of local potential remains constrained by limited human-resource capacity, restricted market access, weak value-chain positioning, inadequate digital literacy, and institutional fragmentation. This study proposes the Sragi Family Economic Resilience Model (SFERM), consisting of asset mapping, community prioritization, capacity building, value-chain development, family resilience integration, and institutional sustainability. The model positions families as the ultimate development outcome and communities as the primary actors of empowerment. Therefore, the success of rural economic development should not be measured solely by increased production or income, but by families’ capacity to develop diversified, adaptive, and sustainable livelihood strategies.
