Abstract

The disintegration between environmental ethics taught in schools and the pragmatic, often consumerist lifestyle of urban society presents a significant challenge for Islamic education. This study aims to analyze the contestation of cultural hegemony between "green school" ideology and urban environmental apathy, specifically examining how Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers construct a habitus of cleanliness through pedagogical role modeling. Method: Employing a qualitative case study approach with a phenomenological lens, this research engaged with PAI teachers, students, and parents in an urban Adiwiyata school. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, then interpreted using Bourdieu’s concept of habitus and Gramsci’s theory of cultural hegemony. Findings: The study reveals that PAI teachers enact a "counter-hegemony" strategy against urban negligence by reframing cleanliness from a sanitary rule to a theological imperative (teology of waste). Three key patterns of role modeling were identified: (1) Theological Framing (linking waste to sin/reward), (2) Exemplary Radicalism (teachers directly handling waste), and (3) Environmental Liturgy (ritualizing cleaning activities). However, the formation of habitus faces "symbolic violence" from the contradictory lifestyle of students' families. Conclusion: The research concludes that for PAI to effectively instill ecological character in an urban setting, it must transcend cognitive transfer and move towards an immersive cultural conditioning that challenges the dominant urban lifestyle. This study contributes to the discourse on Eco-Theology by demonstrating the translation of religious dogma into social praxis.
